COMPASSIONATE ANIMAL FRIENDS OF BROWARD |
|
The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated. – Mahatma Ghandi When you visit an animal shelter, and walk up close to a dog or cat, and really look at it, appreciating it for its life and being, you can see and feel that you have simply connected with Life, not only its life but your life. Then you can love it as you love yourself. For ultimately there is only one Life. – Mike Schwager

The mission of Compassionate Animal Friends of Broward is to seek the end of the killing (euthanizing) of the thousands of healthy and adoptable dogs, puppies, cats and kittens housed at Animal Care and Regulation Division’s two facilities in Broward County, to ensure their humane and compassionate care until their adoption, and to do everything possible to significantly boost public awareness about the availability of these precious unconditionally loving pets so as to drastically boost adoptions and save lives. We are also committed to raising public awareness about the vital importance of spaying and neutering among pet owners in Broward County, so as to prevent the birth of unwanted and unloved puppies and kittens.
Click on “Petition” in the left column, then on 2nd page, read the Petition, click on your Broward Commissioner to enter your name/contact info and send your Commissioner your demand for change at ACARD. |

Send an e-mail to me, Mike Schwager, founder/director of Compassionate Animal Friends of Broward. I’m interested in knowing how you may wish to support this cause. Let me know if you’d like to join a new advocacy group to reach out to Florida voters who are also pet lovers and animal advocates. We must elect new leaders, both in Broward and on the State level, who support no-kill at our shelters, and humaneness to animals. E-mail me at:

We are a group of concerned Broward citizens and animal lovers who insist upon real and permanent change at ACARD. For years, neither the Broward County Commissioners nor staff at ACARD have been committed to the changes recommended in the Petition detailed on page 2 (click on Petition button in left column to access Petition). We are among the millions of pet lovers in Florida and throughout the United States who are opposed to the inhumane treatment, and killing, of healthy and treatable animals at our shelters, including Animal Care and Regulation in Broward County. We are all professionals, and all constituents of the Broward County Board of Commissioners. We are ready to work cooperatively with the Board and the staff – but we are also committed to rallying public opinion and support in large numbers to effect change. If elected officials are intransigent, as they have been until now, then it’s time to support candidates for office who support the lives of these precious animals who are truly, our best friends!
Our mission and our effort is not without precedent: shelters in Charlottesville, Virginia; Tompkins County, New York; and Reno, Nevada have successfully effected change to no-kill in their county facilities. We can and MUST follow. |

ACARD must convert from a killing factory to an adoption facility. It must shift from seeing itself as a disposal unit to a true caring and saving unit that makes every effort to treat the animals in its custody with compassion and humaneness, and make a serious ongoing commitment to facilitate their adoption into loving homes. Only YOU, the animal loving citizens of Broward County, can influence real change at ACARD by demanding and imploring the Broward County Board of Commissioners, the staff at ACARD and the hundreds of thousands of pet and animal lovers within Broward County to embrace a compassionate attitude about the lives of these animals, and to effect changes – and urge changes – that will save lives. You can also visit ACARD and adopt a pet, or urge your friend, family member or neighbor to do same. ACARD’s addresses are: Ft. Lauderdale Animal Shelter (near airport): 1870 SW 39 Street Phone: 954-359-1313 Mon to Friday: 1 PM to 6:30 PM Saturday: 10 AM to 4 PM Pompano Beach Animal Shelter: 3100 NW 19 Terrace Phone: 954-970-0130 Wed to Friday: 12 PM to 6 PM Sat and Sun: 10 AM to 4 PM WARNING: Do not “take for granted” that a reply will mean serious compliance to the demands of the Petition. Bureaucratic resistance and statements that things are improving have been the pattern of inaction in the past. Follow-up with your Commissioner to ask if the demands below have been enacted – and if not, ask why not! |
